I know many of you are curious as to whether the new 200W solid state DRS25A-NXT performs as well as a 25kW traditional magnetron radar.
The attached screen shot shows a very impressive performance today that I observed. This was on auto gain and auto sea state. What you can see is a line of thunderstorms passing to the north of my location. The cells are very distinct. I put the ruler on to check and the farthest one was 55 miles away and shows up extremely well. Looking at the NOAA weather radar, that was in fact the farthest one.
Preliminary results are encouraging that the radar will see birds at long range though I don't have enough experience with it yet.
